The Newberry was founded on July 1, 1887 and opened for business on September 6 of that year. The Newberry’s establishment came about because of a contingent provision in the will of Chicago businessman Walter L. Lawyer, philanthropist and book collector. Samuel R. Rosenthal was a long-time senior partner of the law firm of Sonnenschein, Nath and Rosenthal, specializing in probate and estate law. Rosenthal was born in Manistique, Michigan, served in the Army in World War I, and earned an A.B. in 1921 from the University of Michigan and a law degree in 1924 from Harvard. Officina Bodoni was a private hand-press established by Giuseppe Mardersteig (1892-1977) in 1922. The press moved to Verona, Italy in 1927. Mardersteig quickly became known for his fine work and typographic design. Officina Bodoni produced over 200 books and pamphlets, including several special commissions by other publishers.
